Very Loud Noise While Idling

I have a 2008 Chevy Equinox. When I idol for a few seconds a very loud noise (kinda like a lawnmower) starts and doesn't stop until a few seconds after I start driving again. Any idea what this could be and how much I'm looking at to have it fixed?
It's been going on for a few days. It does it more often in the afternoon when it's hot outside. Only once have I noticed the temperature gauge rising. In the morning it rarely does it. In the afternoon it does it just about every time I come to a stop.

About the only advice we can give you is to stop driving it immediately. Noises are about impossible to diagnose over a computer. It might help if you recorded the sound and posted it to youtube. You could then post a link to it here.
