Need some advice,
I have a 1999 Acura TL and the check engine light came on last week. I had it checked and the code 1457 came up. My gas cap could be loose or the vapor canister has a leak. I checked the gas cap and it was screwed in tightly....so I'm thinking the problem is the vapor canister.
I've looked into what a vapor canister is and what it does with emissions and have a couple questions that Im hoping I can get some advice from people who know car repair much better that myself.
Can I drive my car and not be worried about damaging it in any way until I decide what to do and question #2 is it okay to take this to the local reputable shop for work as opposed to the Acura dealer which I'm sure will cost alot more.

Just for starters I'd remove and replace the gas cap. Make sure it's yours and if any possible mix up get a proper one for the car.
If not luck with that, it will need a careful inspection of all the items the keep fuel vapors in check from the tank to and from canister which is usually underhood.
It should be ok to drive for a while if running properly, no fuel odors noticed till you can locate the issue,

Tom,
Thanks for the advice and I will pick up a new gas cap this weekend. I've talked to a couple of repair men about this and they both suggested replacement of the gas cap. So I'll start there.

once you replace the gas cap, goto your local autozone and have the codes reset. if the light comes back on then you know its your vapor canister.

I was wondering if the check engine light would go off by itself or if I would have to take it to the dealership. Actually, autozone is where I originally found out about the code.
Thanks for this info. I'm hoping the gas cap will do the trick. You and Tom G have been very helpful.

Pretty sure light will go out on its own after a few cycles WHEN the problem is no longer present. If not a reset would speed up the process by the scanner or many will reset with battery disconnected for a time but that may cause issues with other items that you want it to remember (remotes, presets, clock, anti-theft items etc.,) so AYOR if you try that way,
