U-Joint types Sign In

Hello,
I have a 1984 Chevy K10 with a 5.7 and a bunch of miles.
The truck has a slip yoke attached to the rear drive shaft at the transfer case. The yoke has recently started to leak and I want to replace it. I have a used yoke from the junk yard, but it came off a truck with a driveshaft that uses a U-Joint with an internal ring. My driveshaft and existing yoke use an external snap ring U-Joint. Is there any way to use the new yoke (internal/sealed type joint) with my existing driveshaft (external snap ring type joint)?

Hi. Slip joints don't "leak".Unsure They have a grease fitting that you lubricate with the same type grease that you use for the ball joints and tie rod ends. They do have a seal to keep the grease in, but....Sounds like you may be having an output shaft seal leaking gear oil (or trans. flluid) from the transfer case. Don't know if the replacement slip joint will work..if the splines and the length of the joint are the same, should work, but...Clean the area very well and watch to see, for sure, where the leak originates.

Thank you for the reply. However, I have confirmed that it is the slip yoke that is leaking. The output shaft seal is new. The oil is sliping down the splined shaft into the slip yoke and slowly leaking out of the pressed fitting at the back of the slip yoke. The fix is easy, just replace the yoke with one that is not damaged. But I need to know if there is a way I can fit a yoke that is designed to use a u-joint with inside retainers to a drive saft that uses a u-joint with outside retaining rings.

You would be better off finding the yoke that pairs with the old shaft. Trying to find a u joint to fit the old shaft (external snap ring) & the replacement yoke ( internal snap ring) could be a nightmare.

There is enough differnent options on chevy u joints on factory stuff to make it tough getting the right one the 1st time.

If you can't find the yoke to match your driveline... I would look at finding a different driveline & put all new joints in that.......

Have someone braze weld the end cap of the original yoke; I’ve done this hundreds of times.
A light tinning of brass over the cap and the edges and you’re done.

I agree, replacement is unnecessary, even a good cleaning and silicone would easily solve that problem
