Turn off ABS, can I just pull a fuse or something?

Turn off ABS, can I just pull a fuse or something? Sign In

I own a 1997 Buick Skylark Custom 4-door with ABS brakes; it's a 4-cylinder. In bad weather, these brakes lock up and make a herky jerky sound if I need to push down on them hard and it's almost impossible to get the brake to the floor. In good weather they are fine. I have had these brakes fixed I don't know how many times but whatever a mechanic has done has never addressed this.

Finally, someone, not a mechanic, suggested it may be the ABS and that I could turn it off and just have regular brakes. Can I just pull a fuse to do this, assuming the fuse affects only the ABS?

Or, is there another way? How is this done and is this a possible solution?

I am puzzled why you would want to eliminate a safety feature such as the abs. Your post sound like they are working as designed. And why do you want your brake pedal to go to the floor? Studies have shown that a large number of collisions happen when this occures. More information please.

Whatever the cause is, in bad weather, especially cold and snow but rain too, the brakes function differently. By that I mean, they are almost completely useless to stop the vehicle before it travels quite a bit further. I have had to use the emergency brake or pray or both to keep from hitting other cars.

The urgent need to make the brakes work causes me to try with all my might to press them to the floor. However, it takes several seconds and everything I have to get the brake pedal to the floor. In the meantime, it makes an awful, wrenching herky-jerky noise in the process.

Once bad weather is gone, everything returns to normal and they work fine under all conditions.

That is the real problem. I tell and tell and tell mechanics this, and they never tell me what the real problem is and just replace the pads or the whole brakes or something like that but no one has ever diagnosed or fixed this problem.

Have some friends or family recommend another mechanic and get it in for a complete inspection. There may be a slight contamination problem causing a tendancy to lock up on slick surfaces, may be thin tire treads or numerous other things. It may be as simple as needing more stopping distance. I would not advise disconnecting the abs. If there is a problem and they lock up on slick surfaces you are in big trouble.
