Tune Up Specs for 1967 Buick Electra V-8 Sign In

I am a new gearhead to your forum and looking forward to answers given and received. I worked 8 years in the 60's and 70's as a mechanic and body repair man in an Olds-Cadillac Dealership.....then I got my engineering degree and worked in the Chem Mfg for 34 years.....never drifting far from my gearhead roots(pretty much a GM guy). I am currently helping a man in my church "bring back to life" a 1967 Buick Electra. It appears to have the 350 motor from that year ( it's the original mill....the car is a one owner). The usual Haynes manuals available in the local parts stores do not include this car. I need info on spark plug gap, engine timing , points gap and points dwell. Anyone have this info and willing to share? In the future , I hope that can be on the giving end of the information.

Thanks,
Bob Saxton

Bob; The spark plug gap would be .035"; Dwell 30; Not sure about timing. Most were around 4-6 BTDC. Of course, we can't get the octane now, so you may have to retard the timing a degree or two at a time to get rid of the ping. You could start at 8-10 BTDC, then go from there. Once everything else is set, adjust the carb: You turn the air/fuel mix screws clockwise to lean, counter-clockwise to enrichen. What I'd do, was back off, then start leaning until the rpm just started to drop, then back off 'till it just 'recovered'. That would give you the best lean idle. Of course, do one screw at a time. Might not hurt to do it a couple of times allowing the engine to run a bit in between final adjustments. If you set the idle speed at 600-650 in drive, should be close.

Loren's right on with the timing idea vs anything printed right now which I have EVERYTHING of on paper only and not looking at it. Set timing based on the best fuel you can buy octane wise and best to use only "premium" fuel even if it says "regular fuel" on the gas cap in red metal! J'me Souviens! Also remember that regular was 93 octane back then - premium went up to 105!

It's a very straight forward engine. "Uniset" points are handy.

One caution: Timing cover should be an alloy and some of the little bolts will be sticky on water pump to cover. Put some penetrating oil on them now for any day that they need to come out as if this is just what I'm thinking they were easy to snap off.

I have the "Pro Edition" Chiltons for that in old greasy well worn paper monster book now but could dig up details on most items in this car.

Time for some of us "old farts" to kick inWink

Loren, thanks a bunch for your complete and quality reply. I alaso appreciate your advice on the octane rating issue. I will be working on this car Thurs or Friday of this week , so your input was very timely. I did not mention it in my original inquiry , but I have a 58 Corvette that I am going to do a body-off restoration ( 245 engine , BW 4 speed and Posi rear end)....and if my health holds , I have a 58 Belair that I am going to restore ( not an original restoration ) and power to be the unit that I will pull the 'Vette to shows. These projects have been a lifelong dream and current retirement will afford me the time. Just and interesting tidbit.

Take care, thanks, again for the specs and God's Peace and Blessings to you and yours.

Bob

Mr. T , thanks for the "Amen" on Loren's answer....you guys are great ....and I really enjoy the "old fart" discussion; everytime I get in the shop and get down on the floor to do something, I have to go through a bunch of contorsions to get back up! I eventually get the job done , but it takes longer, good thing I no longer do this work for a living....I'D STARVE!

Take care, all....
