My '99 Chevy Cavalier is shifting rough. It's an automatic transmission with about 103,000 miles and the last time I had the transmission fluid changed was around 75,000 miles. What could be causing my problem?

Can you define "rough" a bit more? Check fluid level and color - is it bubbly? T

There's no dipstick to check fluid level with.

I'll plead I'm not sure on how but there must be a way to check the fluid and the level even if it's a metal plug to be removed on the side like gearcases do. It has been reported here that AutoZone (gets some good plugs out of this site) has an agreement with AAMCO trans for a complimentary diagnosis for you if sent there! I'd take them up on it if available to you! There should be directions on checking fluid level it the owner's manual if it not a usual dipstick way, T

If you run your car without coolant for too long, can that cause the transmission fluid to be bubbly?

Dear slips, I am no genius here, but when you ask about coolant, I am wondering if maybe you have overheated and opened up the head gasket and it is just running very badly. How long did you run it without coolant? does the engine idle smoothly in neutral? Terry
