This morning, while driving a 2008 Chevy Malibu with 25,000 miles, I hit a pothole that broke off a piece of my hubcap and (I think) slightly bent the rim. Here are two pictures: My question is, do I need to take this to a shop for inspection, or is it minor enough that I can ignore it? I don't appear to be losing any air, according to the dashboard's tire pressure monitor, and I don't see any bubbles in the tire sidewall. I also didn't notice any drifting/alignment issues when driving home earlier, though I wasn't really looking for it either. Any opinions? dmac0923 Enthusiast Mar 20, 2009, 11:12 AM Post #2 of 3 (2179 views) Re: Tire question Sign In you dont have hub caps. you have a 5-spoke wheel with a plastic overlay trim on it. guess it saves them money. while from the picture it appears its only the plastic over lay that busted with some minor bending of the wheel lip really surprised you dont have a sidewall bubble because that must have been some pot hole to do that damage. i would take the wheel off and check the back side of the wheel which will be bare metal and look for any cracks in the metal. regardless your looking at buy a whole new wheel and possibly a tire if a belt shifted or something __________________________________________________ 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee 2002 Ford Ranger 2004 Toyota Corolla 1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1 Tom Greenleaf Ultimate Carjunky / Moderator Mar 20, 2009, 11:46 AM Post #3 of 3 (2177 views) Re: Tire question Sign In Old phart looking in here! The "hub cap, overlay" call it what you will is junk of course. The nut covers probably hold it on and those won't come with a new one. The wheel appears to be the plain old steel wheel. With the "blip" clearly shown most if layed flat on side will return to original position ok - check in and out as dmac suggested! Then to be really on the safe side despite this looking ok at the pics the tire must have sustained some trauma - may have survived it - can't say. It's worth it to take tire off to inspect inside of tire as well for flaws IMO. Spin balancer while watching should show if the wheel is worth a damn at all. It's either true or it isn't when the blip is taken out. Then with what you find put tire back on and rebalance or get replacement as noted then. Tire if trashed will feel lots better if you get a matched pair - bummer if close but 25k isn't new. Your call on a good used wheel or a new one as needed IF needed.
