I am about to have my, approching 100K miles, 1999 Toyota Camry 4 cyl's timing belt replaced. I've been told by a friend that while the work is being done it would be a good idea to also replace the water pump as a preventive measure. Also that the replacement would be at a lesser cost since the access to it has already been accomplished. What's your feeling on this? By the way, this vehicle is in great shape and will be kept for as long as possible.

there are two ways of looking at this.

1) if it aint broke don't fix it....

2) i already have it off the car and in my hand.

1) sometimes when you get replacement parts over the counter that are sometimes rebuilt units, they can fail at twice the rate the originals can.

2) depending on accessibility to the water pump would have a big factor on whether to replace it now or later.

when you take the pump off see if you can some how check out the condition of it. do the seals look old and dry, is there a lot of corrosion, pitting inside

Agree with dmac. Make the call when you see it in hand on this car. Some have a history of pump failures and I don't think this is one of them. The quality of a replacement will matter. If you swap it get the best you can.

I'm not certain of a real known life expectancy on a water pump? On some - they go all the time and others last the whole life of the car??

Harvey; You are going to be sorry you asked.

Third opinion: The extra labor to replace the water pump while the belt is off is only about .5 hrs. If you've got 100k on the clock, how much longer will the pump last? I would strongly recommend doing the pump at the same time. I would also recommend buying a NEW pump, rather than a reman. So, now you have it. Three opinions. LOL.
