I would like to repair the engine (bent valves) myself and also replace the timing belt myself. Is this possible for a beginner? I hear that the Haynes manuals are good for beginners. It takes years of experience to be able to recognize problems and issues. You may get lucky. Which engine do you have? You'll need to line up the timing marks, and easiest thing to do, is to replace the belt, then check for compression. You can do a cylinder leak down test, but requires special equipment to do that. We can give you a diagram for the timing marks if need be. Hammer is right. This requires very critical type work. If done wrong, you can damage the valves if they aren't already bent.
