Temperature gauge!

My friend has a 1999 Kia Sportage 4cyl motor. The temperature gauge is going haywire. It goes from cold to hot and hot to cold sporadically. What could it be? Thermostat was just replaced about a MONTH AGO.

Being low on coolant and having air pockets will do that. If there was a previous overheating problem it could have a blown head gasket now.

Not a mechanic.How would I know for sure if a head gasket is blown?

You'l have to take it to a mechanic for chemical testing.

No problem. I sometimes don't take all the extra time to explain things because we're accustomed to taking some things for granted that we shouldn't.
The best way to find a blow head gasket is with an exhaust analyzer that can sniff the hydrocarbons in the coolant. The make some liquid chemical tests but they really aren't very reliable.
