Temp gauge seems to be giving a false reading, 98 Escort Sign In

The temperature gauge on my 98 Escort wagon starts to show that it's running hot on my way home from work, about 15 minutes into my drive. So I pulled over, opened the hood, but there was no signs of over heating. No apparent hot smell, no smoke, & nothing felt overly hot. This has happened twice now. Could this somehow be a problem with the thermostat?

If it was a problem with the thermostat, then the engine WOULD be overheating. If you are sure it's not, then you have a gauge problem. That could be the sender, the dash gauge or any related wiring.

It just seems odd that the gauge seems to be sensing because it slowly goes from cold to hot the longer I drive, but yet no physical signs. Maybe I pulled over before it got hot enough to show real signs of overheating. I didn't let the gauge get into the red, but it was almost there.

Don't be so sure it's not overheating. You need to get it checked out before you lose the motor.
