folks, looking for help in understanding why my 2000 civic with 68k miles has started having steering wheel problems of late. At the edge of the turn (on sharp turns) the steering wheel becomes so hard that it feels as if the power steering has converted to a manual. The turn radius of the car almost doubles. This happens more on the right than the left. Took it to the honda service station and they say it's normal wear. Although this is my first civic (got it new in 00). It is not my first car. And I have owned cars that have seen way more years and miles. Thanks

Not normal IMO. Actually - is opposite of what I'd expect - more power assist when turning and less going straight ahead for more "road" feel. Just by chance - will it improve if you hold idle/engine speed up a bit? T

If that does make it lots better than perhaps belt isn't tight enough or PS pump is getting weak. Also, could be fluid is getting sticky - making rack not so smooth and a product called Trans-X helps a lot. Suck out as much PS fluid as you can and put a couple ounces of that in and top off with synthetic ATF and some will behave nicely for ages.... T

Definately want to check that belt tension. If cracked replace it. You may want to flush the system also as suggested, Be sure to get the correct fluid... Honda's require special P/S fluid. Anything else can cause shuddering & hard steering problems.... It's availilbe at any parts store & is marked Honda P/S fluid.

Hey Guest! Why not sign up and give yourself a user name and take credit for your suggestions and knowledge? I was unaware of Hondas requiring a special PS fluid which in most cars is really just a hydraulic fluid and heat is the enemy that causes failures IMO. The product I mentioned (Trans-X) by brand has shown itself to me to correct some problems that heat has caused in PS systems. PS fluid changes are rarely on the periodic maintenance list for cars and really should be from my observations. ***** T
