Starting a Manual Transmission in Third Gear? Sign In

Hi, This is a general question about manual transmission cars and the relationship between rpm and the rod bearings specifically.

If a manual car accidentally takes off from a stop in third gear instead of first gear I understand this will cause extra wear on the clutch...but will it damage the engine's rod bearings???

Two technicians I have asked say 'no'...and that rod bearings are almost always damaged by lack of oil or contaminated oil.

Your thoughts?

I would pretty much agree with those opinions.

I agree also. Starting off in third accidentally often could be a sign of worn or sloppy shifter bushings.

My thanks to Hammer Time and Discretesignals for their expert replies!!!

Does it happen occasionally that drivers just simply forget to shift back into first gear when they come to a stop at an intersection? Maybe they are distracted by a conversation and take off still in third...causing shuddering and clutch wear.

X2 - If not a mechanical problem that driver doesn't drive anymore or not until they learn how,
