Sign In Hi, This is a general question about manual transmission cars and the relationship between rpm and the rod bearings specifically. If a manual car accidentally takes off from a stop in third gear instead of first gear I understand this will cause extra wear on the clutch...but will it damage the engine's rod bearings??? Two technicians I have asked say 'no'...and that rod bearings are almost always damaged by lack of oil or contaminated oil. Your thoughts? Starting off in third accidentally often could be a sign of worn or sloppy shifter bushings. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved. Does it happen occasionally that drivers just simply forget to shift back into first gear when they come to a stop at an intersection? Maybe they are distracted by a conversation and take off still in third...causing shuddering and clutch wear.
