Starter problem Sign In

I have a 2002 Grand Am and I can't get my starter to do anything. When you turn on the key everything comes on, but when you try to start the car nothing happens, not even a sound at all. I've had the starter checked and it is good , I've also had the battery checked and it is good. I'm thinking there is a safety switch somewhere that isn't making contact. I'm not a mechanic so not sure how to go about checking.

Re: Starter problem Sign In

Assuming this car isn't equipped with PCM controlled start and it could be, the trigger circuit passed through the Park/neutral switch on the trans first. The power comes in from the ignition switch on the yellow wire and goes out to the starter on the purple wire.

Does the vehicle have an aftermarket alarm installed on it?

Re: Starter problem Sign In

Then you should probably follow the outline Hammer listed to tracked down where you are losing power....

One last quick question......Is the security light flashing on the dash?

Re: Starter problem Sign In

Was just wondering if the passlock/security system could be causing this, if so what do I do?

No, it's not Passlock. It would start and stall if that were the case. Passlock does not lock out the starter.

Not usually but I've seen it twice now. One on an 03 Impala where a buddy put in a new key sw & on a Malibu (don't remember the year) no start/no crank....... Both the 30 minute relearn fixed.... The Malibu the 30 minute didn't work by itself.... another tech did the 10 minute went outside & I believe use the key to open the drivers door & then it would start......

Re: Starter problem Sign In

I believe your talking about a vehicle that had a Contents Theft Deterrent system. The Passlock system alone has control of the fuel injectors only.

Re: Starter problem Sign In

Let me start from the beginnig with what is happening, a few days ago while driving the security light cam on. it eventually went off. i drove the car the night before it quit working, i went out the next morning to start it and it didn't start. all lights, gauges, radio and sunroof operate. nothing happens when you turn the key, no starter noise, nothing. when the key is in the ignition in the on position and after all light and gauges go to normal the seatbelt light stays on and the security light conitinues to flash. turn to start and nothing, absolutely nothing. i checked battery connection, i took starter off and had it tested its good.

Re: Starter problem Sign In

Ok....Just for the heck of it lets try the 30 minute relearn.... It aint gonna hurt anything

You are going to want to have a battery charger or booster hooked up or fully charged strong battery so the proceedure doesn't get interupted by a dead battery.......

Turn the key from the off to the on position (DO NOT GO TO THE START POSITION) & leave it there for 10 minutes, (can be 12 or little bit more but definately not less) after 10 minutes turn key directly to start position & try to start, if car doesn't start turn the key all the way off and repeat step 1 for a second time, if car still doesn't start repeat for a 3rd time.

If it doesn't start after the 3rd time, try locking & unlocking the door on the drivers side with the key & then maybe the remote (not clear on this last procedure....I'll ask my buddy tomorrow)

On a side note if this does start the car, you are going to want to take the car in to get check out because it won't be a matter of IF this will happen again but WHEN it will happen again.....
