Starter or Alternator? Sign In

Can someone please help? One morning I went to go start my car, and the battery was completely dead, no power what's so ever, tried getting a jumpstart, but nothing happened. It is a brand new battery. So I took out the battery and took it back to the store that I bought it from. They tested and charged it. Nothing's wrong with the battery. So I come home, put the battery back in the car, the car started right back up, no problems. I let it run for about 15 minutes. Turned it off, and then went back about 30 minutes later, and it wouldn't start. There is power from the battery, but when I turn the key, it just clicks once. Could it be the starter or alternator?

We’re going to need some voltage readings from you before we could even begin answering your question.
As in a battery reading with everything off, a reading while you’re attempting to crank the engine and one while its running. I know you said it won’t start again but is it because of a partly discharged battery.
You also said that the battery has power but a battery can be 75% discharged and all your lights; radio and other accessories will still work because with all of that on, they’ll only be drawing maybe 50 or 60 amps from the battery. A starter wants approximately 300 initially and then about 175 amps to keep it turning.
So try boosting again if that doesn’t work, take the battery back to where you bought it and have it rechecked and charged if needed.
Let us know what’s happening with the readings and the state of charge that the battery is/was in.
Dan.
