Sign In Around a month ago I changed the starter on my friends Infinity G20 1999. The starter was bad because it wouldn't turn unless we hit it (confirmed by machine in autozone). After I changed it the car still wouldn't turn over but my friend told me that his engine never turned over unless he held the key in the start position for 2-3 seconds. I never heard of that before but he said it's always been like that with this particular car and he was satisfied with the new starter so I left it alone. Today he called me to tell me that his car isn't starting unless he holds the key in the start position for closer to 10 seconds and it's making a hissing noise somewhere under the hood until the starter motor actually starts turning. Im curious if anyone has ever heard of such a long delay for the starter motor to start turning. thanks Sidom Veteran / Moderator Aug 9, 2010, 9:58 PM Post #2 of 4 (3172 views) Re: Starter motor delay? Sign In No that's not normal at all. I can't look at the circuit right now but I always start with the easiest stuff 1st (I'm lazy like that). If the relay is accessable swap it out with a similar one, after that you'll probably have to start voltage drop testing the circuit. It really sounds like you got some serious resistance some where... Maybe jump the trigger wire off the ign sw to see if it will crank right away. Sign In Thanks for the reply, I was kind of hoping it wasn't electrical. After I changed the starter and it still didn't start (until he told me that there was that delay) I spent close to an hour on the phone with a dealer, and 2 different auto parts suppliers getting conflicting reports about the associated relays. The dealer told me that there was no starter relay for this make and model while advance autoparts had one in their computer but it was 600 miles away. No-one was able to tell me where it was located. There is a labeled fusebox and relay box under the hood but there isn't one labeled starter relay (or anything resembling that). Sign In It's called a Park/Neutral inhibitor relay used with an auto trans to lock out the starter in drive. It's located in the relay box in the engine compartment.
