Starter does not always disengage

 If anyone can help me, please do. I just had new starter and flywheel put on my 1991 Taurus because the starter was not disengaging and the flywheel was damaged. The problem, however, has not disappeared. Does anyone have an idea what else might be the cause? I don't want to have to replace the flywheel again because of this intermittent problem - the beast is running very well otherwise. If you have advice, please share it with me.

Is your key going back to the run position after you start the car?. Ford had a lot of problems with their ignition switches coming apart in those years. binding inside.You can see by following the rod from your ignition cylinder to the ignition switch on the steering column. good luck.

I will certainly look at that, in fact, I was wondering if the ignition switch was faulty anyway - however - the last time this happened, I was using my remote starter - the key was not in the ignition - would the ignition switch be an issue even if the key was not turned in it? This has happened sometimes before with the remote starter as well as with the key in the ignition switch.

Well that takes the ignition sw out of the picture. With a new starter in my gues is electrical short or sticky relay. lots of fun. like i said good luck.

If the remote starter is not a factory installed one (ie: after-market) remove it and see if you still have the problem. relays seldom fail, and when they do nothing usually happens because usually no electrical connection is made.
