Speedometer stops working

Hi there I'm new here.
I drive a Renault Megan 1998, 1.4L milage 82K. My problems is with the speedometer, it works all the time but suddenly it just stops working! And after a while it just starts working on its own!!
Is there a reason for this?

im not familiar with this vehicle at all, speedos are usually cable driven or electronic. in either case, make sure the connection in the back of the cluster is clean and tight. (most likely requires removal out of the dash).
if its cable driven go down to the tranny and make sure the drive and driven gear for the cable arent missing teeth. or if the cable has rested against the exhaust and melted the cable.
if its electric youll have to replace the sensor on the trans
