Speedometer/Odometer malfunction Sign In

I have a 1993 Plymouth Voyager. The Speedometer/Odomometer does not work correctly. At times it is working and then the speedometer needle starts to bounce and then stop completely. A new cable was put in a little while ago and worked for a few months then it stopped working properly again like before. Is this something that can be fixed easily?

If this is a true cable in the case type then the common replacement is just an insert you cut and hammer on the end piece that goes in behind speedo head at dash - pill!

It probably failed again. It's not easy to remeasure exactly from a broken one and the square drive ends will work if just barely touching but don't last too long if just a bit too short.

I don't know how easy it is to get behind dash to remove it on this vehicle. When doing that I'd test with drive wheels up and moving that cable spins and see if you can stop it with your fingers or with the slightest pull.

These come out from the dash end only but you can also remove from trans and spin it with a drill and watch it work in dash - same tricks with a slight pull and push to see if it's just too short.

I've done it but stretching this one is VERY tricky if this is the problem,

Pardon my jumping in; To add: Be sure to check the driven gear in the trans. It could be damaged, as they are made of nylon. When replacing speedo cables, I always go for a new, exact fit, cable and housing. As Tom mentioned, the universal ones must be cut to length and the square-drive end, hopefully, attached correctly.
