I drive a 1996 Honda Accord, 4L engine with 176k miles. I ran out of gas on my way home with just enough gas to get there, but the car wouldn't start this morning. I poured in two gallons using a red gasoline container but the half-inch o-ring at the end of the nozzle fell off the container and into the gas tank. Is this something to be concerned about? Is my car going to explode?

In tank fuel pumps are cooled and lubricated by the fuel in the tank. When you run a car out of gas, it pumps a lot of air through the pump which overheats it and causes some severe wear and many times, failure when they cool off. You will need to use a fuel pressure gauge to verify this ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

No this won't cause your car to explode.... The fuel pump assembly has a strainer attached to it to keep debri from going thru the pump. The strainer is roughly 6" by 3" so the ring won't even clog the strainer. It's really nothing to worry about...
