Hello everyone.
I currently have a Honda, which has been emitting what could be white smoke from the exhaust. I've read up on this subject a bit, but none of it seems to apply to my car. I had one mechanic look at the car, and he assured me that the engine, coolant, and transmission was functioning properly. The only problem he found was that I had an oil leak due to a worn and improperly secured valve cover gasket, which he replaced. He also stated that I had way too much oil in my car, maybe 2 quarts too much, and he drained some of it out and replaced the fluid. After this issue was dealt with, there was still smoke coming from the exhaust, but from what i could tell it was less than what it had previously been...before he changed the valve gasket cover and drained the excess oil. He then proceeded to look under my car, where he discovered that the oil leak I had was substantial enough to have made a mess out of the exhaust pipes. He essentially told me that a great deal of oil had leaked onto the exhaust pipes, which was more than likely contributing to the smoke being emitted from the exhaust pipe in conjunction with the fact I had too much oil. He also checked the condition of my pipes and told me that one of them had a small glitch in it which would need to be welded shut. There is still excess oil on the pipes and the glitch has not been taken care of. My question is could this be contributing to the smoke coming out of my exhaust? When I talked to someone else, they said their best guess is that I had an internal engine problem...that perhaps I had run the car hot...and that with an older model car like I have...it might not be worth fixing. However, I have heard no such thing from the mechanic I talked to, and I trust him because I have known him my entire life and he has never proven to be untrustworthy. The car is not leaking coolant...it has maintained a full and constant level. The temperature gauge in the car reads normal and it is not overheating. Everything about the car seems to be fine, other than the fact there is smoke coming from the exhaust. I just wanted to know if the fact it has been sitting for awhile, the condition of the pipes, the oil residue stuck to it (which is a lot), and any other factors could play into the problem.

When a car is grossly overfilled with oil sometimes the oil will blow by the valves and into the exhast system. If it is a lot the oil will reamain there until burned away. Since the repair was done you said the smokeing has decreased. You may drive a bit more and watch the smoke. It will likely continue to decrease until gone. If you have used this mechanic for years with no issue and feel confident in his work, there is no reason to change you mind now.
