Slight "thud" when turning Sign In

I have a 2007 Nissan Versa hatchback with about 65,000 miles. Recently I've noticed a slight thud coming back through the steering wheel when I turn, like if I'd run over a small branch or something. It's not happening all the time, and is barely noticeable when it does, but as I recently replaced a strut spring I'm worried something may be out of whack. I replaced the spring on the front passenger side, and the thud seems to be coming from the front driver's side. I'm going to lift the car up tomorrow and take a look for obvious problems, any guidance on what to look for would be helpful. I was thinking it could be a loose tie rod.

First off - what prompted you to repace the spring to begin with. That and why just one. They should be done in pairs.

Certainly look to find worn parts and spring alone if installed properly should be causing this but car may not be quite right from just doing one.

Still needs checking for worn/loose anything to do with holding the wheel in place AND the rack the steers it,

T

The passenger side spring actually broke, hence the replacement. I do have a spring for the driver's side as well but must admit I haven't gotten around to changing it out yet. I'll check for any worn suspension/wheel/steering issues tomorrow.

Re: Slight "thud" when turning Sign In

Does it make the "thud" only during turning? If so- look at the cv joint. Check the boots for cracks and leaking grease. If there is a crack it is possible the joint has been exposed to water which is a bad thing. One other thing- look at the spring itself, if is misaligned (spring end should be locked into the top plate) it could be moving enough to make the noise. Spray some lubricant at the top where the spring meets the plate and see if it continues. Also, you should change the other side as well! You could be setting yourself up for problems if you don't.

Re: Slight "thud" when turning Sign In

Yeah, I know I need to get that other spring changed out, and as the weather is starting to turn here in Wisconsin it needs to be done sooner rather than later, so it's now on my agenda for this week. Doesn't look like I'll get a chance to get the car off the ground today, so it'll have to wait till Wed. Thanks marinejunkie and tom for tips on what to look for.

Edit: Yes, to answer your question, it only happens intermittently when turning, usually when turning left for whatever reason. Of course, since I've posted to the forum it hasn't done it once. Smile
