I have a 2001 Toyota Solara with 184k on it. It recently overheated. We took it to pep boys (boo) and they said the thermostat sensor needed to be replaced. We did so and it continued to overheat. We took it to another mechanic shop with great ratings on Yelp and they said it was the radiator, hoses and a dead battery. Well $600 later they now tell us we have a blow head gasket.

My question is, should they or could they have diagnosed the blown head gasket BEFORE they did the repairs to the radiator and replacement of the dead battery. I'm just pissed that we have to pay $600 for repairs just to find out it's another $1500 to fix the head gaskets. Obviously, our car is not worth another $1500 and we would have not had any of it fixed knowing this information.

Any info is helpful. I appreciate it.

No, not really. They have to get the system to seal so it can be pressure tested. The battery didn't have much to do with it though. They probably should have warned you of the possibility if they knew it got real hot.
