It would help tons to know what vehicle you have, but I'll make a wild guess that a parking brakes cable is a possible cause, with worn back brakes. Good luck, hit back with some more info if needed, Tom

i have a 2000 plymouth neon...and it sounds like the sound has to do with the tires. i was even checking the tires to see if there is soemthing there that scratches them but can't see nothing..i have to say that i was going fast over a railroad track and i'm feeling really guilty thinking that thats what caused it because it seems like it started soon after that.

Try spinning the back wheels with it jacked up. Look for anything unusual. If you can look at the back brakes for possible broken parts.

Argg, you said possible railroad tracks. The roads around me look like a War Zone!

See if you notice anything spinning the rear wheels. For the most part they should be silent. Good luck, Tom

Could you of broken a strut or picked up a pebble in the breaks.

A strut should not cause a scraping sound. Worn or broken brake parts can or maybe a bearing problem, T

Could happen. Generally a wheel bearing gives warning and all that caused a wheel to fall off were on boat trailers where symptoms could not be detected well in the tow vehicle.

As said, monitor this and check it out as with any new noise of the sort, T
