Saturn sl1 w/ bad transmission, sell or fix? Sign In

Hello. I have a 2001 Saturn SL1 with about 124,000 miles on it. Two days ago my transmission started "clunking" when shifting from 1st to 2nd and from 2nd to 3rd gears. I took it to the shop and they did a 200 dollar transmission flush, which did nothing to fix the problem. I brought the car to a transmission place and the mechanic said it will be 1,700 for a transmission rebuild. The car is worth around 2,800. I love the car but don't really know much about their life span. I was going to do the repair but am nervous about another expense, the slippery slope of repairs that might be in my future. Any suggestions?

Honestly, you are the only one that can determine that. Repairing it may be the only major expense in the near future, or something else can go wrong. There is no way we can guarantee you the vehicle will go another 100k without any major work needed. Also, not knowing the repair history leaves us more in the dark. You know the car, and you know what you need to do. If the car is worth 1000$ more than the repairs, you are still getting a good deal instead of buying another. You could repair it and add that to future repairs to know when to sell it. Just my opinion of course.

This is the first major repair. I've been pretty good about routine items like oil changes.
