Hi guys, I was wondering if I could get your two cents on what worries me. Car info: Saturn 1996 SC1 It's an older car, but I've been good with getting it maintained regularly so I've haven't had too many problems. What is bothering me right now is the sound I hear from the engine. It sounds like it might be a belt issue, but I'm unsure. The sound is hard to describe; it's a constant soft whining that seems to be getting worse each day. It might the Floridian heat effecting my engine, but the noise is there even first thing in the cooler morning. It has progressively getting louder that I can hear it as I idle in front of a red. I just had maintenance (oil change, transmission flush, balance & rotation, fixed the valve cover gasket) done a few weeks ago, but I had noticed the sound before that though it was just barely a whisper then. Any pointers before I take it back to the auto shop? :(

Hey Yes,worry! Anytime you hear an unusual noise it is reason for concern. The last thing you would want to do is ignore it and end up on the side of the road ,broken down . Take it in to be diagnosed ASAP! May be something minor, who knows.Whine noises can be related to alternators , power steering ....etc.. Thats my 4 cents worth..(inflation) (Per Tom G) Let us know the outcome Jim

You might try to pinpoint the place where the noise is coming from. A mechanics stethescope is made for this but a simple piece of rubber hose will work as well. BE VERY CAREFUL WHERE YOU STICK THE OTHER END OF THE HOSE WHILE THE CAR IS RUNNING!! Put one end of the hose to your ear. Move the other end around suspected areas and you might be able to better tell exactly where the noise is coming from. As 2old mentioned corectly, it is likely the idler or tensionor pulley. The bearings will fail over time and run loud until they fall apart and your belt flies off. It could also be a bad bering in an alternator, ac pump, water pump, etc.
