SOS.Need help aligning thread holes of my bell housing & motor mount bracket for my starter bolt. Sign In

I was replacing the starter on my daughter's 2001 VW Cabrio and everything was going fast and easy. Hooked up my old starter direct and sure enough it was shot, in fact it didn't even have an inner rubber gasket like my new one and that was probably the reason for it failing. Anyways, I had my new starter in place and I thought I was on my way to maybe a one hour job when I noticed I couldn't get my bottom starter bolt through. I took a look at the other side and the thread hole the starter bolt goes through, the ones passing through the bell housing and motor mount bracket wasn't aligned. My starter bolt was bumping up against the motor mount bracket. I SHOULD have supported both before I took out the bolt. Oh well.

So I loosen the side 17mm bolt for my motor mount bracket hoping that it will allow me to joggle the thread holes back even with a pry bar but it just made things worse. You can tell in the picture below that the motor mount is leaning towards the front of the car so I am afraid of loosening the bolt any more(I don't want to have problems getting that bolt back in too). The top bolt is a pain in the ass to loosen so I left that alone for now. I have tried jacking up the car in all different kinds of positions, front, back, left side, right side, back and front of the bell housing, etc, to bring the holes closer together but things just seem to get worse.

Any suggestions on how to get these 2 thread holes lined up again?

Get a block of wood, a floor jack & lift the motor by the pan. That should take off the weight enough to realign the bracket

I should have some time tomorrow, I will try and lift it from the pan like you said. I have a block of dense rubber that would probably be perfect for this. I have to get this car going, my daughter is having too much fun driving around town in my lifted truck. She says I ain't gettin it back until I fix her car. Laugh
