Rumble and occasional stalls on Idle on Cavalier 97 Sign In

Hi all, this is my first post on here, I am in desperate need of assistance!

I own a Chevy Cavalier 97, 2.2 200 000km(about 125 000miles if I'm correct)

Here's the backstory to my current problem : the car stayed in my driveway for 6months, until I decided to fix it up. Changed the battery and alternator, they were both dead. Realized I had fuel injectors leak on no1, then 4 and 3, changed it all.
Now, during the switch of no3, no4 popped out of its socket-I had not released the pressure from the engine. I believe this might have broken the small o-ring, but I did not notice this until too late, because when I started the car, a lot of gaz started coming out of the exhaust and the tail pipe.
Thankfully, I was able to get it all back to normal by changing the o-ring, and after a brief scary 5minutes of heavy white smoke coming out (which i assumed was any residuals being burned), everything came back to normal and the car was driving really smoothly.

Except for one thing : when I'm at a red light, the engine starts rumbling. Rpm shakes from 500-1500, and on a few occasions, the car simply stalled. Now I do not know enough to figure out exactly what is going on but here is what I can add to help pinpoint the issue :

-ETS off light is on, most of the time. I also have a Low trac light once in a while, usually right after starting the car and driving out of the driveway.
-The Air Intake tube was slightly cracked at its extreme point, which I think I might have aggravated when I pulled it out during fixes. I set it back into place but: a) I might have not done so correctly b)the tape and plastic holder I added to it to keep it tightly shut might not be good/enough.
-Sparkplugs are extremely old, I'm pretty sure they've never been changed and I'm at 130000 miles now. I just got myself a set so I'm changing that asap.

My questionS are :
1-if the air intake tube is indeed cracked beyond good use, would that cause Idling issues?
2-would the gaz leak while changing the injectors be responsible for a more serious damage to the engine, causing this?
3-New spark plugs, could that fix it?
4-Any other ideas?

Thank you so much, I know this is a long message, I just figured I'd be as detailed as I can to help!

should check you fuel pressure good chance your fuel filter has never been changed and probably pluged, quite common on cavaliers because the line starts to rot and you can loosen the line off the filter. take the bracket off the fuel filter hold the nut with a wrench and spin the filter to remove see if you can blow through it. wouldn't be a bad idea to check plugs make sure you replace with platinum plugs.

thanks a lot for your response!

I bought platinum plugs indeed, I'm changing them on thursday with a mechanic friend supervising the whole thing just in case.
Where and how can I check the fuel pressure, what tools would I need?

you will need fuel pressure tester.. There is no shrader valve so you will have to disconnect fuel inlet on fuel rail and hook in T adapter.. your mechanic friend might be able to get you one.

Hmm ok I`m afraid I don`t know where any of that is, I`ll rely on my friend for all of this hehe.

As for questions 1-2-3-4, would you know if any of what I said makes sense?
I`m trying to determine the cause of the issue based on what I did, but I`m guessing-and this is just a very uneducated guess- that by fixing the injectors, the pressure is now back to what it should be with functional injectors, and that revealed the fuel pressure problem that you`re suspecting?

Anyways, I`ll start with that and report here when there`s some development. Thanks a bunch!

well i dont think its the install of the injectors if thats what your asking.. you did mention you had alot of white smoke??.. usally if its alot of fuel it would be black smoke. do you still get white smoke?

Re: Rumble and occasional stalls on Idle on Cavalier 97 Sign In

No the white smoke stopped after driving the car for about 5 minutes and quickly cleaning the spark plugs.
I changed all 4 plugs today however, and the car is definitly running smoother. Still get a bit of rumble, but so far, I haven't felt anything dramatic, and no stalls.

We didn't check the fuel pressure, lack of proper tools, but we did check the codes from the computer, got
Po300 -Random Misfire and Po200 Injector Circuit.

Not being sure if this was due to some wrongly recorded error codes on the computer, we reset it, and figured they would come back if the issues were still current, and two hours and some driving later, it still didn't show up.

I'll take it from there and hope that all goes good. Any last thoughts?

Thanks a lot for your help, it's really appreciated!

Re: Rumble and occasional stalls on Idle on Cavalier 97 Sign In

Hi again,

I have changed the spark plugs, and for a while thought that the rumble problem was fixed- 3 days fine. Then I started the car one morning, drove for about 5min and the car stalled at the first red light I encountered, following the same familiar rumble. Ever since, the problem is back to what it was.

Any suggestions?
