Ok so i just got done replacing my transmission and went to start the engine up but nothing..... starter starts to turn but it will not turn all the way..... is it possible that the starter could go bad.... i tried jumping it no help, tap the started no help, gear selector is fine because it will only make the starter turn in par and neutral...... suggestions?

IDK - you may have jammed up torque converter or some issue with the flywheel??

Will engine turn normally by crankshaft bolt? Did this starter turn the engine properly before this work?

Did you re-connect the ground cable that bolts on the bell housing?

Well i got the transmission for free without the torque converter so i just kept my old one on there so i don't think i may have jammed it, also when i try to start it i can see the fly wheel moving through the access hole on bottom of transmission.

I did not try to turn it by hand, and that will be my next step.... This starter was on this vehicle before and worked just fine.

Coincidences happen but don't think it's the starter itself. It needs clean powerful amp from battery and both cables good. Pos and neg.

If bell housing didn't mess up somehow going back in there's a place to look. If torque converter was aligned and stayed put that isn't it.

There should be a fairly easy trigger wire to starter's solenoid which if just alligator clipped to 12v should make it crank. If that worked and won't run there's more to chase down,

On the second taught......While transmission was out i did turn the torque converter so i can drain it but never moved it back where it was..... would that cause any problems?

Did all torque converter tabs line up with flywheel holes. Was there a drain plug on the converter? If so did it line up with a hole in flywheel. If all else fails remove the torque converter bolts and see if you can spin torque converter .If not you may not have lined up the ears on the pump assy and the converter was not fully in . We are only talking about 1/4 -1/2 inch of travel.

I never took the torque converter off so I'm sure it all lines up but i think i may have not lined the pump assy like you mentioned even though im not sure how to do that i will take it all apart again and put back and see what happens.

Re: Replaced transmission in my E250 now it won't start Sign In

what he means is the torque convertor splines into the pump and if it wasn't fully seated in when you put the transmission up it will bind and cause this kind of problem. Try as RT says and remove the bolts to the torque convertor. Make sure it will spin freely. If this uses studs instead of bolts like a lot of fords do, it will still be able to move a bit just so you can see that it isn't bound up. That then will eliminate that as a possible cause and we can proceed with diagnosis. Perhaps, I've missed something as I read this, but have you tried putting a wrench on the harmonic balancer bolt at the front of the engine to see if it will rotate yet? You would have to rotate the motor anyway to get to all the convertor bolts.
