Replaced alternator now car will not start Sign In

Replaced the alternator on my Dodge Caliber 2009, in the process the battery was removed & reinstalled. When I turn the key the every thing lights on the dash, when I turn it to start nothing happens. Is there something that needs to be reset? Fuse? Checked battery with VOM has 12.3 VDC

Sounds like the security system is activated. If you have a clicker, use that. If not, lock all the doors and unlock the driver's door with the key.

Do you have any security lights on or flashing when you try to start it?

Do the headlights dim when you try to start it?

Headlights do not dim....The tests lights go out after 2-3 sec. but the electronic throttle control light stays on for about 8-10 sec then goes out and engine light stays on

Double check the battery terminals to make sure they are very clean....Sometimes even a little corrosion can cause some problems. Usually the lights will dim or go out but not always.....

Also you can try manually unlocking the both the passenger & drivers door with the key, open the truck with the key as well.....Doing this will manually reset some systems....

Cleaned Batt. connection when I reinstalled the Batt. I did check again....OK. The driver door is the only door with keyed entry. When I turn the key to on I hear a humming sound coming from the engine area for about 3 sec ...fuel pump energizing? Turn to start still NOTHING

I'll see if I can pull up the exact specs on your system....This was just a suggestion off the top of my head.
I've seen some systems where if you manually lock & unlock the door or open the truck with a key it will reset the system & start the car.

Did you try that?

Re: Replaced alternator now car will not start Sign In

OK....Also check under the dash by the column and see if there is any aftermarket alarms installed. You can tell by a module zipped tied to a harness and it's pretty obvious when AM wires are tapped into factory harness....

Alot of no starts I've had due to AM alarms, the customer swore there was no AM alarm on the car but there was & they just didn't realize they had one, so if you haven't looked just take a good look under there and make sure there is no AM alarm......

Also hold the high beams on with the switch and try to start it & then turn just the park lights on (not the head lights) and try to start it.....

Re: Replaced alternator now car will not start Sign In

Looks like it has a SKIS on it which basically is just a system that will keep the car from starting without the key (the correct key) but I see you already said that the security light isn't flashing so more than likely that isn't the problem....

At this point, without out a scan tool, all you can do is double check your work....again....make sure you got all the wires hooked up to the alternator. Get a test light and check all the fuses, you can check your owners manual for the location of all the boxes.

If all that checks out, you will need to go down to the starter and check the small wire going to the solenoid to see if it has power on it when someone turns the key to the start position. If it has power, then you have a bad starter and a rap on the starter body with a hammer may get it to crank over.

If you don't have power then you really need a scan tool to access the module to see if it's seeing the right siganls or not...

I know you said you don't have an AM alarm on the car but unless you've actually pulled the hush panel and looked by the column, you don't know for 100% that there isn't one on there.......Like I said before, you wouldn't believe how many people swore to me they didn't have an AM alarm on their car..........and the AM alarm was why their car wasn't starting and it was almost always after a battery got disconnected or went dead....

Good luck....

One final thought, you may want to pull the battery out and have it load tested.
