Replace a waterpump on a 1996 Seville Sign In

Any idea on the number of labor hours Cadillac determines for a waterpump replacement on a 1996 Seville? I don't own a repair manual for this vehicle, are there any instructions out there on how to replace the waterpump myself? Thank you in advance for any info you can provide.

Re: Replace a waterpump on a 1996 Seville Sign In

Mitchell’s flat rate time pays 2.2 hours to do this pump; the actual replacement of the pump is fairly simple as long as you have a water pump socket. This Kent Moore tool part # J-38816 socket is designed to fit the pump, so that the pump can be wound out of it’s housing.
Without having this tool, makes an easy job a bit of a problem.
For what it would cost you to buy the socket; you’d be better off having someone do the job for you. I just googled the part # and the average cost of the socket is about $190.00.

Re: Replace a waterpump on a 1996 Seville Sign In

I want to thank you very much for the detailed reply. I caved and brought it to a dealer. First dealer quoted me $989+tax. I declined and had to pay a $50 diagnosis fee. Brought it to another dealer today, they replaced the pump and cover, thermostat gastket and other gaskets and charged me $622, still very painful. What is more painful is that on the way home tonight from the dealer the "Service Transmission" message appeared along with the Service Engine light as well. Your thoughts?

Take it back to them to have the diagnostics codes read..
tell 'em it came on on the way home....they may just check codes for free....to make sure that they didn't do anything wrong...it just may be coincidental....
Sure wouldn't be the first time.....but it sure is hard to explain to the customer.

post back results....their thoughts.....codes.....

Re: Replace a waterpump on a 1996 Seville Sign In

The Service Transmission message and the SES light remained on all night Friday. Saturday morning I went to get coffee and noticed the Service Transmission message had gone out. From the bagel store I went to Advanced Auto to have them read the SES code. I parked the car and went to the door of the store, but they were closed. I started my car to go home and come back later, and noticed the SES light had gone off! As I used the car the remainder of the day both the Service Transmission message and SES remained off until later in the afternoon. I ran into a store with the car idling and when I cam out the Service Transmission message and SES light were both on. The SES remained on the rest of the weekend and the Service Transmission message would go on and off. Monday morning both the Service Transmission message and the SES light was off and stayed off all day Monday and all day today until about 6pm tonight. The Service Transmission message came on briefly and went out but the SES is still on. I will borrow a code reader tomorrow and see what the code is. I never went back to the dealer that fixed the water pump because all the alarms had been gone since yesterday morning, it’s probably too late to tell them now. I will let you know what code(s) I get tomorrow. Thanks for your interest.

Re: Replace a waterpump on a 1996 Seville Sign In

SES light has been coming on and off all week. Usually just before it comes on I'll get a Service transmission message for about a second or two. Put a reader on it just now, the code is P0717.

That code is for an "input speed sensor "

Problem can be in the wiring, sensor ,or pcm...

Re: Replace a waterpump on a 1996 Seville Sign In

Jim, without jinxing myself, the light has not come on for 3 days now. Do you think something could have become dislodged during the waterpump replacement? I'll keep my eye on it, usually don't go more than 2 days without it coming on, and it's too cold to play around with it right now. Any other info/advice is very much appreciated Jim.

Re: Replace a waterpump on a 1996 Seville Sign In

SHHHHHHHH........

Anything is possible..

Read this....
The Automatic Transmission input (Shaft) Speed (A/T ISS) sensor is a permanent magnet with a coil of wire wound around it. The A/T ISS sensor mounts in the transmission case facing the drive sprocket of the input shaft. An air gap of 0.045-0.109 in. between the sensor and the drive sprocket must be maintained so that an accurate AC voltage can be transmitted. Sensor voltage varies from 0.5 volts AC at 100 RPM to more than 100 volts at 8000 RPM. The A/T ISS sensor has a resistance value of 1300-1950 ohms.

  • The PCM turns OFF the MIL(service engine soon light)(malfunction indicator lamp) after three consecutive ignition cycles without a failure reported.
  • A scan tool can clear the DTC from the PCM history. The PCM clears the DTC from the PCM history if the vehicle completes 40 warm-up cycles without a failure reported.
  • The PCM cancels the DTC default actions when the fault no longer exists and the Ignition is OFF long enough in order to power down the PCM.
Lets see what happens ...keep us posted...

Re: Replace a waterpump on a 1996 Seville Sign In

Now you're going to think I'm completely off my rocker, but could this be tied to a temperature issue? Meaning, is my trans fluid becoming too hot. The service transmission message followed by the SES light came on today for the first time in about 3 1/2 days. I noticed tonight that I was in bumper to bumper traffic when this happened. Thinking back, the very first time this happened I was on my way home from the dealer after the waterpump replacement, sitting in bumper to bumper traffic. As soon as I start moving at a steady and regular speed the service transmission message goes off. One other time it came on was when I left the car running while I went in to a store. Just reaching here folks....
