I tried to change the lube in my differential today and couldn't find the plug. I have a Hanes service manual, which shows a picture of a plug, but I can't find it. The manual also says to change the gasket, but 2 different parts stores said there wasn't one and to use RTV sealant. There's a rubber hose that comes out of the top of the differential that goes up to the frame by the rear shock and ends in a thing that looks like a check valve. Does anybody know if this is where I'm supposed to fill the differential at? I don't want to tear it apart until I know for sure it can go back together right away because the Jimmy is my only vehicle. Thanks.

There isn't a drain plug. You do take the cover off to drain it. "Form a Gasket" will make a gasket as GM probably used just a fine strand of it for sealing and you may not see it well. I think you can get a real gasket if you hunt around the aftermarket makers especially places that sell lots of chrome parts to dress up a vehicle.
The hose on top is just a vent for the air on top of the gear oil which expands and contracts with temperature changes and the hose trick is because it's an SUV it won't suck in water if you are that deep in it.
When cover is all back on you should fill it thru a 3/8" square plug with correct gear oil for that differential till it starts to spill out (level vehicle) and that is the full mark.
Bet you can use a suction gun thru the fill hole and avoid messing with the rear cover completely. Surely these quick lube places and others are doing it that way - I never did as you may not get it all out. Your call on that, T
