Rear brakes low pitch growl Sign In

04 Sedan DeVille - had/has low pitch growl from the rear brakes louder on the right side than on the left after car has been driven and brakes are hot.

Replaced pads. Growl still present. Rotors appear to be OK and not out of round.

Growl not present on hard stops but on very light application of brake, but only after brakes are hot.

The worst was driving down a very long, steep ramp in very slow moving traffic.

The rotors always need to be at least resurfaced if not replaced whenever new pads are installed. The pads need to start with a clean, flat new surface. Otherwise they will glaze over and cause all kinds of noises. The quality of the pads you use has a lot to do with noise problems also.

I've heard a lot of noisy brakes, but none which are so loud that they overpower the radio. Also I've never seen one in which one pad is making only 50% contact with the rotor - two different sets.

The only time the RR chatters is after the brakes are very hot and then only when the car is under 15 MPH with very light pressure on the brake .

comnavguy; 50% contact? Could you explain that? Just one pad making contact? Or, just half of each pad making contact?

Yes, One-half (bottom half) of the right rear brake is making contact with the rotor.

The problem is that it is intermittent and only groans when it's very hot and only after the car has been driven a long way and braking is downhill and going very slow.

That takes you right back to resurfacing or replacing the rotors ans you were told way back in the beginning of this thread.
You also need to make sure the slides are good and free.

The rotors have been turned. So now they have a new surface AND the third set of pads. And I clean the parts as if they were going to be used as a medical appliance. I've done "Pad slappin" in the past, but no more.

If the pads are new, the rotors true and the slides free, you can't have that problem so something still isn't lining up.

The problem has to be with the caliper, itself. Something is mis-aligned.
