What is that connector from the valve cover to the air cleaner? I've looked everywhere to try and find the answer myself but I can't. So i'm stuck asking a dumb lame question.

It's just a breather that goes to the air filter to re-burn escaping crankcase fumes. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

No, it just slips into a grommet and prevents fumes from escaping. It enter the air cleaner before the throttle body/carb so there is downdraft there but no vacuum.

There is a lot of play in it at the valve cover should I bother changing the grommet?

If you look in the air cleaner where it attaches to, there should be a little filter it goes thru.... If it's missing you can pick up a new breather filter at any parts store....
