Re: 2001 Saturn SL1 Intermittent starting Sign In

HI ALL! My mom has a 2001 Saturn SL1 that is doing the exact same thing. instrument lights turn on, all power stuff works but no click from the starter. At 1st my dad thought it was the battery so he replaced it with a new one. A day later my mom drove the car for 20 minutes or so stopped at the bank and 5 minutes later got out and tried to start the car and the car would not start. After being stuck there for an hour i decided to tow it to my house and after an hour or so it started just fine. So my conclusion was the start is bad, i checked the terminals, wires, and everything drove it for 15 minutes and waited 3 minutes to start the car and the car would not start at all. Now that the engine is hot, the starter would not work! so there for it is a starter heat soaked problem and just to make sure i was right i went ahead and poured water on the starter and the car started right up. The car still does the same thing all the time and for now until i could replace that starter pouring water on it always does the trick. So for those who are having the same problem, the car would not start because of the starter/components swell up and failing from heat.
If a ground/power cable was loose or dirty--I'd expect the starter to still turn, just slowly and unwillingly. No turn at all, sounds more like a bad starter.
And just in case some body wants to know where to pour water on, the starter on a 2001 saturn SL1 is at the back of the engine close to the engine bay firewall just under the intake manifold. Here are the Directions i gave my mom ( Pour water right i between the engine valve cover where it says saturn efi/ohc and the throttle body/intake manifold. use the OHC marking on the engine valve cover as a marker to where the starter would be. So until the starter is replaced bringing containers of water would really help to get you back on the road. good luck!

I always advise Saturn owners to carry a bucket of water in their trunk. Or, replace the starter. Wink

Hell, that's the way I always fix starters..........

I save money on batteries too. I just buy jumper cables because they are cheaper than a battery.
