Hi all, I have a1996 Ford Mondeo 1.8 zetec. Over the last 2 mot tests the emissions have passed but the HC has raised considerably 2007 mot Hc = 36ppm 2008 mot Hc = 42ppm 2009 mot Hc = 143ppm 2010 mot Hc = 170ppm Does anyone know what could be causing this, the only thing I have changed over the last few years is to block off the EGR valve. Had new plugs, leads, air filter, iold and filter have also been changed. The new exhaust seems very sooty around the outlet. Thankyou for any help anyone can give

Hi, No codes atall, engine seems to run fine although a little thirsty, just wandering if it could be the lambda sensor or something else, I think it was about 2 years ago i blanked off the egr valve an it would seem from that time is when the HC's have risen. could that be anything to do with it ?. Thankyou for your reply and any further help you can offer

No codes makes it a little tougher but not impossible..... I'm sure you know but I post it anyway. HCs are raw unburned fuel. CO is incomplete combustion (partially burned fuel). It's just been a slight raise over a period of time so might be a little harder to track down.... Do you have records of the what the other gases have been doing... CO2 in particular. Might be something as simple as a dirty injector..... I would probably start off with cleaning the injectors. There are a couple of different methods that is referred to as "injector cleaning". I would make sure the shop that is doing it uses the method that disables the fuel system & runs cleaner thru the rail. The other method just hooks a bottle into the intake & cleans just the outside of the injector. While this 2nd method is great for cleaning the intake & combustion chamber, it really doesn't clean the injectors too well (well it cleans the outside of them good )....
