Radio stays on even with ignition switch turned off Sign In

Hey guys, on my 2000 Dodge Neon I went out this morning to discover a dead battery. I jumped it and put it in the garage, turned it off and discovered that the radio didn't shut off when I removed the key as it always did.

What do you guys think could cause this to start happening, possible bad ignition switch?

Thanks,

-Jim

How about power windows? Do they still work with the key out?

no power windows in the car, I tried the turn signals and wipers instead since they only operate with the ignition on, neither worked

I disconnected the battery and re-connected it, it seems to be working fine. Wonder what it could be? I'd like to make sure it doesn't happen again.

The reason i asked about the windows is because most newer car have a circuit for delayed exit that powers the radio and windows but not all other things. This power shuts off the moment the door is opened if it's working correctly.

there has to be a stuck relay. figure out what else is working with the ignition off, i would be surprised if its just the radio. a good way to do this is to check what else the radio fuse is powering by looking in the manual and check that device.

Yeah HT I know what you mean about the delay, my new car has that feature this neon never did though.

The fuse diagram shows that its on a circuit all by itself.

Like I said once the battery got disconnected and re-connected its been acting properly, but something had to cause this and of course the next time it would occur is out somewhere and not at home :(

Maybe the ignition switch was in the accessory position. Can you take the key out in the accessory position?

That doesn't really mean anything. Any component can receive an alternate power supply independently through a different circuit, unrelated to the first power supply circuit if it's wired to do so. These things won't show on the diagram for that fuse as it would not be part of that circuit although I looked at the diagram for this stereo and it's not tied into anything else. If this happens again, pull fuse #13 in the engine compartment box which is the only "full time" power supply to the radio and see if that shuts it off. If so, I would blame the radio.

If you pull 13, the radio will shut down regardless. I would check for ignition switch voltage at the radio on fuse 2 in the fuse block when the radio is stuck on. Could be a bad ignition switch or a lock cylinder that is allowing the driver to remove the key from the lock cylinder in the accessory position which is one click back from the off position.

Aftermarket or OE (original equipment) radio?
Any electrical add-ons, alterations or modifications?
Is the radio part of an amp system?
If so, how many amps/

Re: Radio stays on even with ignition switch turned off Sign In

it does let you take the key out when the switch is slightly turned to the accessory position (if its fully turned back you can't, but move it slightly forward, not enough to off, you can)

But what I experienced on Friday it made no difference where the key was the radio was just constantly on. I'll remember fuse #13 for future reference, but based on the key I might just try replacing the ignition switch.
