RPM and Gas Mileage

Question is RPM and MPG. I have 2 Hyundai Sonatas. 2006 std 4 cyl; 2007 4 cyl automatic. Engines are supposed to be identical. (Really pleased with both cars. Great value.)
2007 (just bought) 2100 RPM at 60 MPH; 2006 2600 RPM at 60 MPH. Dealership states that the difference is due to rear end gearing. They also state that there is a difference in engine efficiency such that the MPG will not be affected despite the higher revs in the standard transmission car. I have doubts but I am not engine performance literate. Comments?

Not too sure about this type of car but in MOST cases a manual transmission is more economical in relation to MPG, But this may be an issue that technology has finally changed this with this type of car. Because RPM's do play a part in the amount of gas you will burn.
Anyone else have an Idea?
