Since that's an OBD1 system, you can't just use a code reader on it but you can pull manual codes.
This particular code list is for an '89 car but the retrieval procedure is the same

Who can't get a code? You are counting blinking CEL light blinks to convert to #s explained in full by Hammer time just above. Didn't re-read that but first series of blinks tells nothing but that it is communicating. Subsequent series of blinks will repeat, long pause then the next or indicate it's all done. It should do something even it nothing is there to read.
If a CEL bulb is blown that would mess up the show,
