Hi,

I have a question that may or may not be simple to answer that I'm asking for my friend since she needs to figure out what to do next. I personally have no clue about cars so I googled up a car discussion board and came across this site.

Anyway, she has a Mazda 1993 Protege, and she wants to know whether a timing belt can have anything to do with the radiator. Apparently steam has been coming from the the front of the car for awhile and some days ago it finally broke down.

I apologize if anything is unclear or if the question is hard to answer, because i don't know more than above as that was the information i was given. Thanks in advance to any responses.

sounds like the car is simply overheating.....

but in answer to your question, timing belts wouldn't cause the car to overheat. they just usually break and could potentially destroy the engine lol

This is a little tricky from the description and I'm with dmac on that timing belt wouldn't likely cause overheating - However if the belt was hanging on by its last hair and broke added heat could have been the last straw??

Just to add: If it is the water pump that is leaking, it is behind the timing belt cover and the timing belt itself. So, if you have to replace the water pump, should replace the timing belt, too.
