Passenger seat stuck in recliner position: 1994 olds regency Sign In

My youngest got the passenger seat to recline for a power nap and the darn thing won't come back up! Yes, it has power controls.

The whole shebang goes forward and back and up and down to adjust for height BUT the back will not return upright ... SO ANNOYING!!!

Any ideas? suggestions very much appreciated.

i know you said your car has power seats, but for the most part most seats still have the manual seatback recline handle.

if thats the case the return spring in the handle probably broke or popped off hence locking the seat in that position.

your best bet is to remove the seat from the car for easier access to see whats going on.

I don't know the first thing about removing a power seat ... no manual anything visible from outside... only 2 buttons on side of seat to inflate/ deflate the lower back portion of the seat.

There's wires and all those power fixtures under there... what would what I should look for look like? And, what would I do to it?

Just some thoughts on this: Most seats have just four bolts to the floor if you look for them. Watch out though - as if there's rust where they mount to a stronger bracket to floor pan they can snap right off! Some may detach and leave the metal box on floor and uphostered seat can come out.

I don't know exactly what style seat this is but you mentioned the air thing. Never had to dig into one so can only offer some basics on these things. The "reclin" is sometimes powered and sometimes just mechanical with a flipper level like a pin ball game on the side for reclining just the back - look for that.

Amazingly these things are not a huge headache or haven't been over zillions of years dealing with them. Many will use one motor and cables to make all the different actions. Some moving parts are exposed and one fine lady liked to stuff a towel under her seat which handily wound up the tightest knot in cables and spinning things you could dream up and worked fine when I cut it all out!

There should be plugs that just unplug underneath - if seat will still go to highest setting and go forward and back they may be more accesssable to unplug for removal if really needed at all - I doubt it.

Can you hear a motor trying to run? Seats are usually empowered even without key in ignition so with door open look at the dome light - if it flickers with engine off with a seat request the power is getting to a motor - then let's figure that out.

There could be different ways this model did things depending on option package when new. It's a great thing to go to a pick your own junkyard and find a similar GM car with the same controls you have and maybe one is all moved already to inspect what should move what and how then return to your car and compare.

Also: Some of the cables are much like old speedometer cables and remove in a similar way. Squared off tips can round out, cable break, gear break - things like that. Some you can operate back to a reasonable postition with a drill and a creation you can make up with broken parts.

If no power and it definately is power controlled certainly rule out fuses and breakers but if part of the seat's action works I highly doubt it's a separate circuit for just the recline thing.

Just some ideas and stuff noticed by me over the years - hope it helps you to the right area,

T
