I have a 1996 Chevy Cavalier with a 2.2 liter engine that is overheating. I have changed the thermostat, but the new thermostat does not seem to be opening. The hose from the engine to the radiator is hot, yet the hose from the radiator to the thermostat is cold. Could the problem be the water pump, which was replaced only a year ago, or something else?

Not to sound mean, but are you sure the thermostat is in properly?

Leave the thermostat out and see what it does. If it still does not change anything them it might be the water pump. Good Luck

Just a idea, maybe the cooling system needs to be purged of an air pocket. But like way2old said it could be waterpump.
