Oil light, is my car safe to drive? Sign In

I have a 2005 Vauxhall Corsa, 1.2 litre and just hit 80,000 miles. I recently drove 230 miles and the oil light came on when in first, second and third gear and only when the clutch was down. Had the oil Level checked at its nearly at max so that is not the issue. Drove a further 100 miles that same day and it happened again, drove another 100 the next day and it didn't happen. I am getting it serviced on Wednesday so will get it looked at then, however need to drive another 230 miles home before that. Is it safe to drive? I know nothing about cars and haven't had help from other websites so just hoping for any advice as I don't want to risk damaging my car although do need to get it home. Thank you.

There is 2 options.... Either you have no oil pressure or a fault in the sending unit circuit..

From here I can't tell, but if you drive you car with no oil pressure you will ruin the engine...

The only thing I will say....If you have driven your car over 400 miles with the light on.....more than likely you have oil pressure...With no oil pressure an engine would have failed by now..plus an engine with no oil pressure will start knocking and making other noises fairly quicly...

But this is the internet....we can't see your car....So it's your call, the safe thing to do would be to have it checked

Bella515: An oil warning light means shut engine off right away or risk near instant engine destruction and you are asking now if you should drive it? NO. As Sidom suggested to get a real oil pressure reading mechanically. My guess is wrong oil was used but had just enough oil pressure not to completely seize on you but serious damage may already be done. Check.

Read owner/operator's manual says clearly not to drive if the light it on - in fact probably says don't even let it run more than to test it,
