Oil in alternator

Hi, im new on here and I could really use some advice, I dont know much about car repair at all. I have a 2000 W reg fiesta 1.3 and yesterday oil got accidentally spilt over the engine, some of which seems to have gone in the alternator. Looking underneath the car the underside of the alternator is wet with oil and some of the coil of wire inside also looks like it is wet with oil. Also the battery light on the dash has come on. Could the oil be the reason and if so is there any advice you could offer for someone like myself who has a tight budget and cant really start taking the car to bits with my lack of knowledge. Is it possible to clean off the oil with out taking the car apart? I have checked the battery connectors, the alternator belt and they seem ok. Many thanks Richard

You can get a can of electrical spray cleaner and try to wash the oil out of the alternator. Pay close attention to the area where the brushes are. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.
