Is it possible to tighten an oil pan plug too tight? Have mechanic who says I need new oil pan. How tight is tight enough??

Re: Oil Pan Plug 2000 Chrysler Concorde Sign In

Some people crank them in so tight its like they think it was a lug nut. That strips the threads out of the pan. Quick lube job places are good for that. I've seen some idiots actually use air tools to put them in! I don't have an exact torque spec for you, but the general idea is to get it snug, not tight. Lot of engines now use cast aluminum pans and the threads tear out of them pretty fast if they get cranked on. The drain plug has a sealing washer on it to keep the oil from leaking out, so it doesn't need to be tightened in much.

There is a Heli-Coil kit that is made to repair your threads instead of replacing the whole pan. I've used a few myself. The local WalMart and other 10 minute change shops in my area were great moneymakers for me when I fixed the pans they wrecked from overtightening or the engines they blew by not tightening it at all. Also loved it when they FORGOT to put oil BACK in it during the service. If you use these places, I'd advise having your engine worked on by a shop that does more than just services and has knowledgeable techs working on your car. Oil changes are a simple thing that can wreck the whole works if not done right. Worth a couple extra bucks to have a pro do it. You may find many shops are actually close in price to the lube centers anyhow.
