This pertains to a 1998 Pontiac Sunfire 2D, 2.2 L with about 150K (just following the rules).

This car had some weather stripping leakage for awhile before we caught the source of the problem. The interior smells pretty bad and has had a great deal of water in it during the past couple of weeks. The intense odor is coming from the carpet.

Are there any good odor removal systems that I can buy at local stores rather than ordering online? I'm willing to buy cleaners in addition to odor eaters if such a thing exists for cars.

I'm afraid your just too late for any of that. There is nothing that will take the odor out of that carpet now. I'm afraid your only option now is to replace it. There is a padding on the back of the carpet that just stays wet and mildews. If this ever happens in the future, you HAVE to lift the carpet and dry the back of it within a couple days or the carpet is ruined.

Thanks for the feedback. I suspect the carpet is ruined, but I cannot replace it right now. I'm trying to be realistic and would like to at least partially mitigate for the smell though. Anything would be better than continuing to do nothing.

I've found some articles on using baking soda and odor eaters but nothing that lists specific product names and where to get them. I know where to get baking soda, so if I could learn some product names for odor eaters and cleaners that would be helpful.

Fabreeze (sic?) works very well with most odors, but if it's in the insulation under the carpet?

I had the same problem. I went to a local janitorial place and got a product there that they use in hotels to remove odors in the carpet. It took several times but smell is gone. You really have to wet carpet well with the stuff.
