ODB2 Bluetooth Scanner / Scan tool

So, I am a heavy DIY'er and I am in the market for a top notch Bluetooth ODB2 Scan tool that has advanced functions or can add modules without spending an arm and a leg.
Do ANY OF YOU have one or have experience with one that is better than the others?
Being able to program an ECU or a key would be AWESOME but...... Not totally important.

Programming?
You got to be kidding.
DIY code readers and so called scan tools basically deal with generic OBD2 standards. These are light years short of dealer or professional capability. The average cost for Independent shops for a scan tool is $4,000 to $12,000 and most of these will not do any programming, maybe with the exception of the Autel which uses pirated software and could end at any time as they are being sued by numerous manufacturers.
The real factory software scan tools are in the $60K to $100K range if you can even buy one without being a dealer.

I figured that and I have seen a few shops use the thousand dollar tools (out of my price range right now) but, does anyone have any experience with the bluetooth Scan tools?

There are a lot of Bluetooth apps for your phone that work with generic OBD2.
The Autel uses Bluetooth but your up around $3K with that. Even $1,000 won't buy much of anything these days.

Yeah, I guess what I looking for isn't "There are a lot of apps out there". Trying to get some various observations from those who actually use these and not from a website that does scan tool comparisons. if that makes any sense..

They all have limitations.
I have one called OBD fusion that I use when I go to the auction but like all the others, all it gives you are generic OBD2 definitions. It will read manufacturer codes but all it gives you is the code number and you have to research the definition.
Some have other bells and whistles like graphs for data but it still comes back to only basic OBD2 generic data. Some may give ABS codes but none will access the numerous other modules in the car.

I am retired now but I personally own a Snapon Solus Pro but that does no programming. The shop I worked for and are still affiliated with uses an Autel which does most keys and some programming.
There are a lot of PC based systems that can do a lot also, depending how much you want to spend. They are cheaper than buying a professional scan tool.

I have been using an Actron for awhile but it's a pain in the rear and can't be updated. Doesn't have Airbag or Trans so I have been trying to do some research on replacing that scan tool with something I can use with an old ipad mini or an inexpensive standalone scanner. There is A LOT of BS apps out there so I was hoping to get some information from someone who is MUCH more well versed in this area..

Of course there are all kinds of different versions of basic code readers. The jump in price going from generic equipment to professional or factory is dramatic.
You are looking in the generic market and I doubt you will find anything in your price range with the capability you are looking for.

As you said in one of your replies...there are a lot of BS apps out there. I don't really use any of those but from what I have seen with some of the blue tooth phone apps, is they can pull codes but the live data is so unreliable and in a lot of case just doesn't make sense that they just aren't worth it other than pulling a code.
One way would be to look at the used market, this is where you are going to get the best equipment for the lowest price but you have to be careful, because like anything used, there is also crap & scammers out there. but scan tools really don't hold their value so there are some good deals out there from tech who have upgraded. The down side is you are going to be getting a scanner that isn't up to date but unless you are working on brand new cars, then it shouldn't be to big of a problem.
I would say you need a budget of, at least $500 to $1k if you want to get anything decent. If you just need codes, there is a bunch of stuff now that will read multiple modules in the $100 to $200 range. Years ago I bought a nice little code puller for $200 so I didn't have to get my scanner if I just need to read or erase a code. It is so limited that it probably goes for $70 today.

I was looking at the Bluedriver code puller / reset function for about $100. That way, I can get my codes or reset codes. That seems to be the better code puller

That's about as basic as it gets. You can get that for under $40.

Like Hammer Time, I'm recently retired, and I own a Snap On Solus Pro. The shop I retired from also uses the Autel scanner. For what you are wanting to spend, you will not likely get much more than code reading and code clearing abilities, and probably not capability to read transmission , airbag or other modules.
