No brake lights on rear Sign In

I have a 1999 Chevy Prizm that has no brake lights when I press the brake pedal. Fuse for it is blown. Tried replacing the fuse, but fuses blow again. I took all the lamps out and the third brake light is burned out, others are fine. Someone said something about brake switch behind pedal, but can't find it. Don't know what it looks like. No exposed wiring around the sockets. Help before I get rear-ended!!!!!

Thanks!

Re: No brake lights on rear Sign In

First of all, When you install a new fuse does it blow as soon as you put it in, or after you press the brake pedal.
If it blows before depressing the pedal, it may not be the brake light circuit.
The switch will be located on the pedal and a little ways up from the foot pad. It will have 2 or more wires running to it.
There could be other accessories on the same fuse that could cause it to blow. Are there any other items inop? Turn signals??

Fuse blows after pressing brake pedal. I checked brake pedal, but no wires run from pedal. Maybe on Master Cylinder? Nothing else on same fuse.

Re: No brake lights on rear Sign In

If there is a electrical plug on the aluminum housing of the master cyclinder, unplug it and see if it is burnt or if there is fluid in the terminals, if so you will have to replace the switch on the master and clean the plug with brake/ parts cleaner.
If this is not the issue, you will have to trace the harness and inspect for any wires worn through.
You have a dead short somewhere in the brake light circuit after the brake light switch.
If both left and right rear turn signals work fine until you press the brake pedal, the problem will not be with eather lower brake light circuit. It could be the 3rd brake light circuit, or if it equipt with cruise control could be something there.
Is this car a hatchback?? if it is, look at the harness in the liftgate door jam the wires could have broken here and shorted to ground. assuming that the 3rd brake light is in the liftgate.
You may have to pull back a rubber boot to see the harness.
