Nissan Primeria Trouble

Hi, I drive a Nissan Primeras Diesel which has 75k on the clock. I was on my way to work this morning and the fuel light came on. I thought nothing of it ass I knew I still had about 50-60 miles to go. However, a few miles on, the car started to slow and wouldn't pick up speed, even when I dropped gears. It didn't actually stop, but I turned into the next service station and filled up with diesel. I definitely noticed a burning smell when I got out of the car. I started the car up and drove cautiously out of the service station - she was driving fine and picking up speed as usal. I am still a bit concerned as I don't know what caused this and whether or not I have likely done any long term damage? Do you have any advice?

Has this odor gone now? I think it was lower on fuel than was good for it. Diesels in particular don't like running out of fuel as you may have found out. It was probably unable to deliver proper fuel pressure and you may have been smelling incomplete combustion odor as you said it wasn't running properly either.
I'm not a big fan of trusting lights for low fuel or "check oil" and reset trip odometers and get fuel and check oil at the #s and time gone by for my own vehicles.
Also: I think fuel pumps last longer if you don't let fuel get too low as they stay cooler,
