Need Help With Engine Codes Sign In

Here is the info on my car:
2001 Chrysler Sebring sedan
2.7 engine with 91,000 miles

I am getting a check engine light with codes P0442 (Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected <small leak>) and P0445 (Evaporative Emission Control System Purge Control Valve Circuit Shorted).

My first question is can one code cause the other? My other question is what can I do to fix this? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Eric

Re: Need Help With Engine Codes Sign In

Eric; I was hoping one of the more knowledgeable guys would jump in. But...A small leak can be most anywhere in the EVAP system, from the fuel tank to the engine. Usually, a loose gas cap will set a "Large Leak" code. The purge valves are a common failure and I've seen them leak. You can check the valve with an ohmeter and are easy to replace if that's the culprit. If not, a smoke test may be required to find the origin of the leak.

The only thing I would add is I would probably fix the purge valve problem 1st & then rerun the evap moniter
